Born and raised between the South Bronx and Harlem, Malik Yoba is best known for his acting career, starting with his breakout role in the 1993 cult classic Cool Runnings and parts in the TV shows Empire, New York Undercover and Arrested Development. But Yoba has been actively involved in real estate development since 2017, when he launched Yoba Development.

Malik Yoba already beat the odds once: landing a starring role in the cult classic movie “Cool Runnings” without an agent or even a head shot. And now the actor who went on to star in the groundbreaking television series “New York Undercover” wants to break into an industry that may be even tougher than Hollywood: New York City real estate development.

On Friday, June 10, Malik Yoba screened his documentary project, The Real Estate Mixtape at the NAREB Region VI Regional Conference at Miles College. The project explores real estate development and how partnerships can help make diversity in real estate a reality. The veteran actor known for films and TV shows from Cool Runnings and New York Undercover is trying to draw young people of color into the real estate industry. While people were watching his acting career, Yoba was investing in real estate in his 20′s and learning from those he says gave him a seat at the table.

The Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters welcomed actor, Malik Yoba, to their school on March 28 to present his documentary film series, “The Real Estate Mix Tape Vol. 1,” which also features Majora Carter, real estate developer and founder of Hunts Point’s Boogie Down Grind Café. Though Yoba is not a former student of the school, we were informed, “he was born in the old Lincoln Hospital down the road.”

Malik Yoba was born in the South Bronx and grew up playing amid empty lots and run-down buildings throughout New York City. Compared to some of his neighbors and friends, though, his family was lucky. Yoba grew up in a co-op for low- and medium-income families. His dad belonged to a union that helped build it and had ownership of his unit.

Actor Malik Yoba came to Baltimore last week to check on what he called a role of a lifetime. Standing at a once forgotten, rough-and-tumble corner in West Baltimore, the star of “New York Undercover,” “Empire,” “Designated Survivor” and several films looked up to inspect a pair of apartment buildings at the $800 million Center/West development. As an investor in the project with developers and Ian Arias, Yoba is branching out his successful career from the stage to the street.
